One of the services offered at Compassionate Solutions is educational therapy. But what is educational therapy? What does an educational therapist do and how are they different from a tutor? How can you know if educational therapy is the right choice for your child?
An educational therapist provides support to students facing learning challenges. They work one-on-one with students to help them meet learning goals. They are well-versed in individualized education plans (IEP), and they can work with your child according to the goals laid out in their IEP.
An educational therapist works with the learning style and needs of the individual. They address three components of the learning experience: the academic, the socio-emotional, and the psycho-educational. The main takeaway is that educational therapy addresses the big picture of the student, not just their current struggles with a specific academic topic.
What differentiates educational therapists from special education teachers?
While educational therapists do have similar training to special education teachers, they do not teach in the classroom setting. They are usually hired by the parents which positions them well to advocate for the parents and students in IEP meetings (if invited) and cater more specifically to the individual needs of the student rather than a class or group of students.
Likewise, educational therapists do not teach curriculum. They focus on teaching students tailored approaches to learning and studying according to their unique strengths and weaknesses. The relationship with the educational therapist is not limited to the school year. Practice and learning can continue over the summer.
What differentiates educational therapists from tutors?
Tutors and educational therapists are similar because both provide services outside of the school. However, tutors tend to focus on a specific subject matter or offer help with homework. Educational therapists work to tackle bigger issues. They can provide the tools your child needs to succeed for future learning. Instead of assisting them with material in a student’s class, they can give them the tools to master any material the student will encounter in the future.
Educational therapists give your child the keys to their future by helping them work with their unique learning challenges. Educational therapists will often have more experience working with students with learning disabilities than tutors.
